Food Assistance (formerly known as food stamps) is called SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The goal of SNAP is to help families stretch their food budgets to buy healthy food and to help families meet their basic needs while adults work toward financial stability.
SNAP benefits are loaded onto a Ohio Direction Card, which can be used like a debit card at stores.
Healthy people under 60 participate in Food Assistance Employment and Training while receiving food assistance to help them gain work experience and move toward self-sufficiency.
The Food Assistance program is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Eligibility for food assistance is complex – based on family size, income and expenses. Both families and individuals may be eligible. You may qualify for benefits if your household’s gross monthly income is at or below 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines. Some households may qualify if they have incomes over the limit if someone in the household is elderly or disabled. See our FAQ page for more information on SNAP here. Adults, families, and children are potentially eligible for SNAP if the income, residence, and citizenship requirements are met.
To get a better idea of if you may qualify, use the USDA’s food assistance calculator, review our Frequently Asked Questions or check your eligibility online.

Your SNAP load date:
A new 20-day issuance schedule is now in place for new food assistance cases and for those that experience a 1-day break in eligibility. If you’re an existing client and your case has not closed since Feb. 28, 2014, you will stay on the old 10-day schedule.
The issuance date is based on the last digit of your case number. This affects the date you can expect your card to be loaded after you receive your initial benefits. The 20-day issuance table looks like this:
These dates apply when a “new assistance group” is created when:
• An individual that is not in our computer system applies for food assistance benefits
• Someone moves out of a case and applies for food assistance with another case as an independent assistance group
• Someone moves out of a case and applies for food assistance with their own case
• An individual seeks to be included in his or her own food assistance group in the same case
• An assistance group moves from one county to another, requiring a new application
These new issuance dates also apply when a one-day break in eligibility happens. This can happen when an assistance group has failed to take a required action:
• Failing to recertify by the given deadline
• Failing to return verifications, an interim report, etc. by the given deadline

For your awareness: SNAP recipients now have the ability to lock their EBT cards using the EBT Cardholder Portal at www.connectebt.com.
(In order to utilize the Mobile App, SNAP recipients must have registered/created an account on the EBT Cardholder portal). SNAP recipients are encouraged to select the ‘Lock Everywhere’ option when not actively making a purchase. This will reduce the risk for benefits to be fraudulently stolen.
Additionally, SNAP recipients can now sign up for email and text alerts on the Connect EBT Mobile App and the EBT Cardholder Portal at https://www.connectebt.com/.
SNAP recipients can choose to receive alerts for new transactions (purchases, returns, deposits, etc.) and if there are changes made to their account (address, PIN, password, etc.). These alerts will help recipients to manage activity on their account.
